Recycling old news – Mamamia is just fucking awful

Mamamia is just fucking awful
That is definitely old news. We all know it. I’ve probably said it a million times before, and repeated it often. I usually don’t pay attention to it but today on a Facebook post I saw they had allegedly copied from/ripped off a blogger.

I was curious so I went looking for the evidence and there was little doubt. The similarities were obvious. While looking for that post on the Mamamia Facebook page I saw another post asking: “What’s making news this afternoon?”

With a policy interest in sex work regulation the #1 item caught my eye, and I’m sure it caught the eye of many Mamamia readers. I clicked on the link to see the story details. The header read “Monday afternoon’s news in under 5 minutes” and I read on. .

Monday afternoon’s news in under 5 minutes.

Monday afternoon’s news in under 5 minutes.

I was surprised (not really) to read that a girl had not been found working in a brothel recently, but that five people had been found guilty of charges relating to a 14-year-old girl working in brothels. The girl had been discovered working in a brothel in 2012. Yes the title was click bait and I had fallen for it. Goddammit! I really hate falling for click bait, but out of morbid curiosity/policy interest I read on.

WA Today reports

This news sounded familiar so I clicked on the “WA Today reports” link and lo and behold, this sounded familiar for a reason.

WA Today reports “Five guilty”, on October 14, 2014

The WA Today report was from October 14, 2014. This was old news. Nine months old. It was stale news, repackaged as click bait to outrage the readers of Mamamia.
.
Clearly it’s shocking that a 14 year old girl was working in a brothel. A number of brothels in fact, but how is news from October 14, 2014 “Monday afternoon’s news” on 13 July 2015?
.
Is Mamamia in the habit of recycling old news? Worse is Mamamia in the habit of packaging old news as tragedy porn to generate clicks to its website, so as to satisfy advertisers? Is Mamamia using the exploitation of girls to generate revenue and profits? It looks like it to me.
.
Mamamia says in its About section “We put the rights of the child above all else and it’s central to the messages we promote” but if they are willing to repackage old news of exploitation to generate income, I think they may need to rethink their definition centrality. It appears money is more central to Mamamia on Monday 13th July, 2015.
