February 3, 2013

It’s not yet 10:30pm and I’m exhausted.

It could be due to a lack of sleep last night, or a busy day yesterday, or it could be because I spent an intense and positive hour participating in Pride March Victoria.

Marching with The Australian Sex Party I slapped hundreds of people along the route with slap bands. Each crisp snap of the band around their wrists was a triumph. The few that jumped back and flew from my hand caused a few in the crowd to exclaim disappointment but these renegades were quickly souvenired from the ground.

We could have handed out three times as many, bringing a small sting of nostalgic delight to more in the crowd. With our supply of slap bands exhausted I took up chants of “Vote 1 Sex Party” and proclaimed a few of our choicest policies such as “No religious exemptions from anti-discrimination laws” and “decriminalise drugs.”

The Australian Sex Party was sandwiched between the Australian Greens and the Liberal Party of Victoria but I could swear the Sex Party received the loudest cheers.

Too quickly it seemed we reached the end of the march and we filed into the Catani Gardens. We crashed a photo opp of the Victoria Police, laughing all the way, and then took to our stall running a raffle, selling stubbie coolers and spreading our message.

I can’t wait to do it all again next year.
