Stupid Americans #25340

December 24, 2012

This morning provided me with a chuckle when I read that gun rights enthusiasts were attempting to have Piers Morgan deported from the USA because of his opinion that stricter gun controls are required in the aftermath of the Newtown CT shooting.

The laughs got bigger when I looked at the petition on the White House petition site:

“British Citizen and CNN television host Piers Morgan is engaged in a hostile attack against the U.S. Constitution by targeting the Second Amendment. We demand that Mr. Morgan be deported immediately for his effort to undermine the Bill of Rights and for exploiting his position as a national network television host to stage attacks against the rights of American citizens.”

It never ceases to amuse and amaze me to the extent which Americans don’t understand their treasured Bill of Rights.  It never ceases to amuse and amaze me that people in general can’t recognise hypocrisy and contradictions.

Let’s get this straight.  The petition signatories want Piers Morgan deported for “his effort to undermine the Bill of Rights“.   Clearly the signatories have forgotten that within their beloved Bill of Rights the 2nd Amendment is preceded by a 1st Amendment.  This 1st Amendment allows the Westboro Baptist Church to picket the funerals of soldiers and Sandy Hook victims.  Surely it should allow commentary on a news organisation such as CNN.

However it appears that the petition signatories may believe that the Bill of Rights doesn’t extend to a “British Citizen“. They may be disappointed to learn that learn that many decisions of the Supreme Court have affirmed that any person within the United States is covered the Bill of Rights be they citizen, immigrant or foreigner.

Petition creator Kurt N of Austin, Texas should probably have sought legal advice before creating this petition.  At the very least he should have used Google. The answers easy to find.

Now that the petition has achieved 25,000 signatures it has reached the threshhold for an official response. It will be all too easy for the Obama Administration to knock this one out of the ball park.

In wanting to defend their perceived 2nd Amendment Rights to high capacity death machines the signatories want the government to deport someone for exercising his well established 1st Amendment Rights.  Not a chance.

As for “for exploiting his position as a national network television host” the signatories would likely be apoplectic if they saw the tweets from Fox News owner Rupert Murdoch.

p.s. #25340 is the number of signatories to the petition at the time of my screenshot. I haven’t posted 25339 previous accounts of American stupidity, although we all know there have been literally billions of instances of Americans being stupid.
