Be the change, the difference, the Safe Space

August 31, 2012

In the last few weeks I have read many wonderful articles
and blog posts regarding Slutwalk.
They are personal, heartbreaking and inspiring.

As I read those and remembered others I recalled discussions at
Occupy Wall Street and Occupy Melbourne about creating safe spaces.
They are well and good but as individuals we can do so much more.

Each of us can be the change we desire.  Each of us can be the safe space.

Don’t create safe spaces.
Be the safe space.

No matter what someone wears.
No matter what someone does for work.
No matter what someone does for recreation or pleasure.
These things do not mean you can judge and demean.
These things do not mean you can harass and abuse.
These things do not mean you can rape.

Do not say someone deserved it.
Wherever you are, at home, at work, on the street, in a bar or club…

Be the safe space.

I hope to see all of you at Slutwalk Melbourne.
