Facebook – what the fuck are you doing?

August 8, 2012

Not only has Facebook not removed the racist and hateful Aboriginal Memes page but it appears Facebook has taken action to protect the page.

By now most Australians online have heard of the Aboriginal Memes page.  It was being shared over the weekend for people to report and was reported by SBS yesterday: “Social hate page targets Indigenous

Last night it was thought the page had been shut down.  The link read as: “The page you requested was not found”

However it appears that the page name was changed to “[Controversial Humor] Aboriginal memes

The change in name raises questions. How did the page change its name?  Normally a Facebook page cannot change its name once it has 200 likes.

Has Facebook changed the name directly or authorised a name change? Given the calls to close down the page the action to change the name or allow the name change is extraordinary.

It is all the more extraordinary given that Facebook has previously removed breastfeeding pictures.  Surely these aboriginal memes are more offensive than the female breast.  Surely they violate Facebook’s own Community Standards and Terms.

“Facebook does not permit hate speech. While we encourage you to challenge ideas, institutions, events, and practices, it is a serious violation to attack a person based on their race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation, disability or medical condition.”

3. You will not post content that: is hate speech, threatening, or pornographic; incites violence; or contains nudity or graphic or gratuitous violence.

Reported in The Australian this morning it seems that Facebook disagrees.

“Thanks for your recent report of a potential violation on Facebook. After reviewing your report, we were not able to confirm that the specific page you reported violates Facebook’s statement of rights and responsibilities,” the response said.

Facebook should face questions as to how this name change was allowed.  Not taking action is one thing – but taking action to change the page name is effectively an endorsement of this hate speech.

The Page owner or admin is also reported as saying:

“These c . . ts live off the tax decent white Australians pay every week, I think we have every right to make fun, actually.”

Not only does the page owner appear anti-aboriginal – but pro-white.  Someone might want to educate this small minded bigot that Australians of all skin colours pay tax every week.
