USA for Africa – “The Banana Boat Song”

June 2, 2012

Watching a repeat of Spicks and Specks this morning (after Rage) a question alerted me to USA for Africa performing “The Banana Boat Song” during the recording of “We Are the World.”

It is fascinating to watch in the following video as these superstar artists – tired after a long night following the 1985 American Music Awards – began riffing on “daylight come and we want to go home.”   With Harry Belafonte among the group it quickly became a tribute performance.   Enjoy!

At the end of the video you can hear some say “That’s the B-side.”

According to Spicks and Specks this was considered until someone said it would be inappropriate for a song about counting bananas to be the B-side to a song that sought to counter a famine.

Nevertheless it’s an amazing snippet of a moment in musical history.
